LSW: Hi, Ms Tan. Thanks for agreeing to this interview. When did you join Henry Park?
TLE: I joined on 2 January 1978.
LSW: What were your first impressions of the school in the early days?
TLE: My impressions were that pupils from better home backgrounds resulted in higher expectation from their parents, a closely-knit staff and a principal who set a clear direction in providing the best for all pupils.
LSW: What were some of your most memorable moments in the school?
TLE: There were many happy and memorable moments in school such as preparations for the school opening ceremony. Together with Miss Sim and Ms Swee, we had to set up the Science Exhibition. We went round almost half of the west zone looking for life specimens and also spent many afternoons planning the physical science experiments. It was tough but we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the job.
I also organized the school camps. The earlier camps that were held in school, saw us sleeping on the benches in the canteen. I remembered that the principal Mrs Chew slept in her car. At the Teachers' Day celebrations, I was touched by the appreciation shown by the present class and also the many former pupils who came to visit me.
LSW: In your opinion, how has the school changed over the years?
TLE: In terms of size, it now really covers a much larger area and is thus able to provide more facilities. Space for activities and extra classes is no more a problem. However, what is lacking is a field that is big enough for the school to hold its Sports Day.
Every classroom is equipped with a visualiser, computer and LCD and these greatly help in the teaching process unlike the old school where these were only available in the AVA Room. I remember that many classes would gather at the same time in the AVA Room to watch movies after the exam. Now, the present pupils can watch movies or educational tapes in the comfort of their own class.
